Java thread pool was designed to avoid the overhead of creating new OS threads because creating them was a costly operation. But creating virtual threads is not expensive, so, there is never a need to pool them. It is advised to create a new virtual thread everytime we need one. Next, we will replace the Executors.newFixedThreadPool with Executors.newVirtualThreadPerTaskExecutor().

This could easily eliminate scalability issues due to blocking I/O. Project Loom features a lightweight concurrency construct for Java. There are some prototypes already introduced in the form of Java libraries.
I willingly admit that changing one’s mindset just takes time, the duration depending on every developer. This means threads are actually waiting for most of their lifetime On one side, such threads do not use any CPU on their own. On the flip side, it uses other kinds of resources, in particular memory. For unit test type simulations, perhaps try to find all topological sorts of triggered futures or otherwise try to understand different dependencies between different tasks. Start looking for ‘smoke’, large memory allocations or slowdowns that might not influence correctness. Start by building a simulation of core Java primitives (concurrency/threads/locks/caches, filesystem access, RPC).

What does this mean to regular Java developers?
Loom and Java in general are prominently devoted to building web applications. Obviously, Java is used in many other areas, and the ideas introduced by Loom may well be useful in these applications. It’s easy to see how massively increasing thread efficiency, and dramatically reducing the resource requirements for handling multiple competing needs, will result in greater throughput for servers. Better handling of requests and responses is a bottom-line win for a whole universe of existing and to-be-built Java applications. I once did something similar in C# to deterministically test some concurrency-heavy code . It gave me a lot of confidence that it actually worked. You can consider calling an async function as spawning a user-level “thread”; chained-up callbacks are the same thing, but with manual CPS transform. Microservices are 100x more popular than app than need 1TB of memory.
New methods in Thread Class
There are also chances for memory leaks, thread locking, etc. So, if your task’s code does not block, do not bother with virtual threads. Most tasks in most apps are often waiting for users, storage, networks, attached devices, etc. An example of a rare task that might not block is something that is CPU-bound like video-encoding/decoding, scientific data analysis, or some kind of intense number-crunching. Such tasks should be assigned to platform threads directly rather than virtual threads.
When you want to make an HTTP call or rather send any sort of data to another server, you will open up a Socket. That would be a very naive implementation of this concept. A more realistic one would strive for collecting from a dynamic pool which kept one real thread for every blocked system call + one for every real CPU. At least that is what the folks behind Go came up with. The goal of Project Loom is to actually decouple JVM threads from OS threads.
